As ski season winds down with each passing day in March, Horseshoe Valley Resort held their last ski day of 2024-25 on Sunday, celebrating one of their most successful winters on record.
“We definitely saw a record January, very close to a record February,” said Jonathan Reid, the resort’s general manager. “Our hotels were sold out every weekend, so it was great to see. […] The consistency of the weather allows people to make those decisions earlier and commit to going on that ski trip.”
All of the resort’s 27 runs were open on Sunday as skiers from near and far went for their final runs of the winter.
“We’re not going to be skiing for about another nine months or so, so I figured we’d get one more run in, just have some fun while we can,” said Sean Fu, who hit the slopes on his snowboard.
Greg Cuneo-Kearney, a sit-skier from Barrie, was at the resort for its first and last days of the ski season.
“The conditions are really good,” said Cuneo-Kearney. “Some people wouldn’t like all the ice, but for me on the sit-ski, it’s a bit better than fresh powder because I could slide across it better.”
Reid says Horseshoe Valley Resort typically closes for skiing the weekend after March Break even if the conditions are favourable to stay open later into the spring.
“We ran out of skiers before we ran out of snow this year,” explained Reid. “We typically find that the skiers, especially after an incredible year like this, they’ve had so many days on snow that they stop showing up. They start going in the garden and riding their bikes and getting out doing more summer-spring activities.”
The resort will get set to begin preparing for golf and mountain biking season this week.
Mount St. Louis Moonstone and Snow Valley are set to wrap up their ski seasons next weekend, with the latter scheduled to host their annual ‘Pond Skim’ next Sunday.
According to Blue Mountain’s website, the official end to their ski season is not yet known.
