Provincial police remind residents of the serious dangers posed by downed power lines, particularly in the wake of a destructive ice storm that swept through the region two weeks ago.

The storm caused significant damage, with broken tree limbs snapping hydro lines, which left thousands without power. As the cleanup continues, police urge residents to be careful and know what to do if they encounter a fallen power line.

Police stress that no one should ever approach a downed power hydro line, regardless of whether is appears active or not. They say that even if the line looks harmless, it could still be live and extremely dangerous. Officials advise staying at least 10 metres (or more than 30 feet) back from the line, roughly the length of a school bus, and immediately call 911 along with Hydro One to report the hazard.

"Your safety is paramount," OPP stated in a social media message shared on Monday afternoon.

The risk isn’t limited to those on foot. If a power line falls on a vehicle, police say occupants should remain in the car, adding the rubber tires can act as insulators, protecting those inside from electrical shock. Police say not to touch any metal parts of the vehicle, adding to honk the horn for help.

In extreme cases where staying inside the vehicle poses a real threat, like a fire, police suggest exiting the car using a very specific method to avoid electrocution.

“Jump out with both feet together, ensuring no part of your body touches the vehicle and the ground at the same time. Hop or shuffle away, keeping both feet together," OPP stated.

Hydro crews and emergency personnel continue to respond to storm-related damage across the region. Authorities ask residents to remain patient and vigilant, especially when navigating areas where debris and power infrastructure may still pose a risk.
