Huntsville firefighters want to remind residents about lithium-ion battery safety
Recently, one of the local volunteer firefighters from the department shared their experience with a lithium-ion battery which resulted in a ‘close call’ fire at their construction site.
Due to training and protocol, the firefighter was able to move the battery to a safe location just before it entered thermal runaway. According to the department, thermal runaway is a process that can cause a battery to catch fire or even explode.
Officials say this one incident highlights how crucial it is to be vigilant with battery safety.
“Always inspect your lithium-ion batteries for any signs of damage or swelling. If you notice any issues, discontinue use immediately and dispose of them properly at a designated recycling center,” shared a fire official with the Huntsville/lake of Bays Fire Department.
