Businesses and institutions across Barrie must register for the city’s new waste collection services that come into effect in September by Monday.

The City will transition to an automated cart collection system on September 8, which will include garbage and organics. Businesses and institutions can apply for one set of carts as part of the new program. Business and institutional property owners need to register by March 31 to receive waste collection from the City after September 7 and avoid service disruptions.

"Properties with multiple owners must select one owner as the registrant on behalf of the property," the City states. "Business and institutions that are currently registered with the City and receiving municipal waste services need to contact their property owner/manager to confirm their interest in receiving municipal waste services under the City’s new automated cart program."

Those who miss the March 31 deadline will need to contact the City via email to register for service, but this could result in a delay in cart delivery and service disruptions. Businesses and institutions can still register for the current municipal waste services until July 15.

The new carts are expected to be delivered sometime during the summer months, ahead of the launch of the new program. The carts are to be put aside until September 8.

"Mixed-use properties with up to five residential units are eligible for a maximum of three sets of residential carts and one set of business/institutional carts. Residential units and business/institutional units will not be eligible to share carts," the City explains.

Registering for the municipal curbside collection program isn’t mandatory for businesses and institutional properties. Only those deemed eligible that wish to receive or continue municipal curbside collection need to register.
