Businesses face devastating aftermath of Orillia Ont. fire, expressing uncertainty for the future

Flames engulfed a historic, century-old building in downtown Orillia on Tuesday, leaving businesses in ruins and devastating the local community.

According to the City of Orillia, the building near 7 Peter Street South was significantly destroyed, resulting in the total loss of several small businesses. The fire’s impact extended beyond physical destruction, as business owners took it online to express their heartbreak and uncertainty for the future.

Businesses share emotional reactions:

Melted Sugaring Loft located at 5 Peter Street, Unit 203:

“Unfortunately, yes, we were affected, and sadly the studio didn’t make it, along with many other businesses and apartments. I lost everything in this fire as did many. I am just glad everyone made it out safe, and I am so thankful to our first responders.” The business is closed indefinitely, with all appointments canceled.

“Reflecting on the loss of his first studio and gallery, the owner Thompson shared: “Fire, though destructive, is the crucible of transformation. Just as it refines and purifies, so too does it prepare the ground for renewal. From the ashes of this building, a new story will rise.”

Three Crows Speak Studio located at 9 Peter Street, South:

“My beloved studio and happy place burned down today [Tuesday]. I have lost everything—so many paintings and pieces of my soul.”

Three Birds Salon located at 7 Peter Street, South:

The salon owners expressed their devastation, calling the business their “baby.” They launched a page for donations to help rebuild, saying, “We are left to rebuild our salon and get all the tools needed to be successful again. Please, if you can help, everything helps.”

Dr. Comics located at 79 Mississaga Street, East:

“We are heart broken here at @drcomics we lost everything to the building fire yesterday [Tuesday] here in our beautiful downtown Orillia. We loved our location so much and told everyone to visit the beautiful downtown Orillia. So many great memories and over 40 years of collecting pop culture history. We are now permanently closed. Thank you Orillia for the great memories, community support and business. We will miss you that’s for sure.”

Kelly’s Clothing located at 75 Mississauga Street, East:

“As everyone knows there was a fire at my store today [Tuesday]. I have put my heart and soul into my business for the last 30 years. I am devastated to say the least by the fire but at least no one was hurt or lives lost. Thank you to everyone who has reached out to me with such kind words. I don’t know at this point what will happen going forward but I will be forever grateful for everyone’s support. Not only now but throughout all my years in business. Lastly, thanks to all the first responders for their efforts in trying to save the building. It’s wonderful to live in a community with the support that I’ve received today. Thank you.”

While no residents lived in the affected building, nearby residents and businesses have been displaced. The Downtown Orillia BIA is planning events and campaigns in support. Donations and offers of assistance can be directed to them at deron@downtownorillia.ca or by calling 705-325-3997.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, an individual is being sought after arson was suspected by police. The building has been deemed a total loss with damage estimated at $4-million.

Fortunately, no injuries have been reported at this time. This tragic loss marks a significant blow to Orillia’s historic downtown and the businesses and community members that called it home.
