A Nova Scotia artist, who has been making a name for herself supporting some of the biggest stars in music, is finally turning the spotlight on herself.
Singer-songwriter Laura Roy is originally from Canning, N.S., but has been based in the United Kingdom since 2017. She’s toured the globe singing with artists like Dua Lipa and Sabrina Carpenter.
“I received two Grammy nominations for the Doja Cat album for a song that I was a writer on and yeah, it’s just been a crazy whirlwind of a few years,” said Roy.
“I performed to the biggest crowd that I’ve performed to yet, which was around 80,000 people at Wembley Stadium.”
Now, Roy is trading stadiums for studios in the Maritimes – focusing on her own sound for the first time.
“I felt really called to come home, to kind of reintegrate into the community here and the amazing talent that I’m still connected with here,’ she said.

Roy is working on her first solo album, which is being funded independently with help from fans and supporters.
“I was kind of encouraged by a mentor of mine when I came home and some other friends to start an Indiegogo campaign, which is like a crowdfunding campaign to just get some support and funding behind the album,” she said.
Roy says the record will be her most honest work to date.
“I can tell you that it’s going to be very, it’s very raw and very, I think it’s just like the truest picture of who I am as an artist,” said Roy.
After years of helping bring other artists’ visions to life, this next chapter is all about Roy.
“It’s like equally, if not more exciting to be actually taking this time for myself and dedicating time and energy and allowing other people to feed into that as well and to believe in the music that I’m making,” she said.
