A rural transit service to Cavendish and the north shore of Prince Edward Island will now be a permanent fixture in the summer following a pilot project.

The service will run seven days a week starting in June, according to a news release from the P.E.I. government. It goes from Summerside and Charlottetown, stopping in Kensington, Stanley Bridge, Cavendish, North Rustico, Oyster Bed Bridge and Winsloe.

The summer transit route started as a pilot project in 2022. The province says ridership increased by more than 12 per cent in 2024 with more than 10,000 one-way trips.

The province spends roughly $100,000 a year on this route which runs until Sept. 30.

“By making this service permanent, we’re supporting our Island economy and ensuring that people can get where they need to go safely and affordably,” said Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Ernie Hudson in the release.

One-way trips cost $2 and monthly passes cost $20 for adults and $10 for seniors and post-secondary students. Public transportation is free for children and students in Grade 12 and below.
