An inmate at the Provincial Correctional Facility in Milton Station, P.E.I., will serve five more years in custody after taking a hostage at the facility.

Jonathan Trainor was sentenced in Charlottetown provincial court on Friday to five years. He also received the following additional concurrent sentences:

  • four months for uttering threats
  • two months for mischief
  • six months for assault with a weapon
  • six months for attempting to escape lawful custody

Charges of forcible confinement and a probation order were stayed, according to a news release from the P.E.I. RCMP.

Queens District RCMP responded to a report of an assault with a weapon at the Provincial Correctional Facility on Aug. 1, 2024.

“During an educational class, an inmate—later identified as Trainor—grabbed a facility employee and threatened them with a piece of glass in an attempt to escape,” reads the release.

Another inmate was able to stop Trainor and police say the employee was not injured.
