Longtime P.E.I. MLA Pat Murphy dies at 62

Islanders are noting the death of Pat Murphy, a longtime member of the legislature for the western P.E.I. constituency of Alberton.

Pat Murphy, a longtime MLA for the western P.E.I. constituency of Alberton, has died.

Murphy was first elected to municipal government as a councillor and then mayor before becoming a Liberal MLA – a position he held until 2019.

He served on several standing committees and in cabinet as minister of Rural and Regional Development.

Murphy was also involved in upgrades to community spaces, infrastructure projects, and support for youth and recreation.

Outside of politics, he was the longtime owner and operator of the Alberton Irving.

Murphy’s obituary says he died last Thursday at home. He was 62.

His funeral will be held Monday afternoon at the E. Gerald Rooney Memorial Chapel in Alberton.
