MP Jaime Battiste from Nova Scotia is looking to become the next leader of the Liberal Party of Canada and in turn become the first Indigenous prime minister.
Battiste, representing the Sydney-Victoria riding, announced he was launching an exploratory team for a campaign to be the next leader of the federal Liberals in the wake on Justin Trudeau’s resignation last week.
“This is an ambitious plan and I am fully aware of the complexity of raising $350,000 over the next 12 days,” Battiste said in a post on X Monday, referring to the entrance fee prospective leadership candidates must pay.
Battiste was elected in 2019, becoming the first Mi’kmaq elected to Parliament.
Leadership candidates must declare their intentions by Jan. 23. The party will pick Trudeau’s replacement on March. 9.
