N.S. man charged after barricading himself in home, making threats: RCMP

A 79-year-old Nova Scotia man has been charged after police say he barricaded himself in a home in Tangier, N.S.

Police were called to the 15,000 block of Highway 7 around 2 p.m. on Monday where a man was allegedly making threats related to weapons from inside a home.

Once on scene, police say officers learned the man was the only person inside the home and he was continuing to make threats and refusing to come out.

The Nova Scotia RCMP Emergency Response Team, a K9 unit, and a crisis negotiator also attended the scene.

Immediate neighbours were asked to shelter in place as a precaution. Highway 7 was also closed and the public was asked to avoid the area, although police said there was “no public safety threat to anyone outside the home.”

Police say the man exited the home after several hours and was safely arrested.

Guy Murphy was remanded into custody and charged with one count of uttering threats.

He appeared in Dartmouth provincial court on Tuesday.
