N.S. man arrested in Truro after allegedly robbing gas station, assaulting woman in Halifax

A 29-year-old man is facing charges from three different police forces in Nova Scotia after he allegedly robbed a gas station in Fall River and assaulted a woman in Halifax.

The RCMP responded to the gas station in the 2900 block of Highway 2 around 6:40 a.m. Tuesday.

Officers learned a man had entered the store with his hand in his pocket, indicated he had a weapon, and demanded cash from the till.

Police say the man fled the scene and got into a vehicle, described as a grey or silver SUV, parked under the Highway 102 overpass and headed north on Highway 2.

No one was injured during the robbery.

RCMP officers reviewed video surveillance and obtained a suspect description.

Halifax Regional Police told the RCMP that a man matching the description had assaulted a woman at a restaurant in the 300 block of Herring Cove Road in Halifax around 5:50 a.m. Halifax police said the man and woman left the area in a grey Kia Soul.

“Video surveillance from the Halifax location allowed HRP to identify the vehicle’s owner as residing in Truro,” said the RCMP. “That information was shared with Truro Police Service.”

Truro police found the suspect’s empty vehicle at a home in the town just before 9 a.m. and contained the area around the residence.

“The suspect attempted to flee from police but was safely arrested on scene without further incident,” said the Truro Police Force.

They also found the 35-year-old Truro woman who had been assaulted in Halifax. She was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The RCMP has charged Colby Daniel Scott Smith of East Chester, N.S., with robbery and failing to comply with a probation order in connection with the incident in Fall River.

Halifax Regional Police has charged him with the following offences:

• assault
• failing to comply with a probation order
• causing a disturbance
• driving while prohibited.

The Truro Police Service has charged Smith with the following offences:

• forcible confinement
• assault causing bodily harm
• driving while prohibited
• mischief under $5,000
• failure to comply with a probation order.
