Longtime Atlantic University Sport president reflects on career ahead of retirement

After 26 years at the helm of Atlantic University Sport, CEO Phil Currie is stepping down.

For nearly 30 years, the Atlantic University Sport (AUS) Basketball Championships has had at least one constant fan in the stands: Phil Currie.

This year will mark his final tournament as leader of the organization.

“I actually started in the Halifax Metro Centre,” said Currie, who serves as the president and CEO of the AUS. “When the job became available, I put my hat in the ring.”

Currie, who has led the AUS for more than 26 years, announced his retirement earlier this week.

“It’s been a tremendous honour to hold onto this position for as long as I have,” he said. “It’s quite an accomplishment, it’s something I’m proud of.

“I’m proud of the association staff who have been with me for a long time.”

Currie said he looks forward to watching the AUS continue to evolve under new leadership.

“I always believe I’m holding the seat for the next person,” he said. “I hope I’ve done a good enough job that they have a solid foundation to grow and take the association to a whole new level.”
