Halifax Regional Municipality overnight winter parking ban takes effect Monday

Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM) announced the municipal over night parking ban will be in effect from Monday through March 31, 2026. During declared weather events the parking ban will be enforced from 1 to 6 a.m.

There are two zones for the parking ban:

• Zone 1 – Central – refers to the Halifax peninsula and downtown Dartmouth within Highway 111 (the Circumferential Highway) and some surrounding areas. 
• Zone 2 – Non-Central is a designated area outside of Zone 1 – Central.

Residents can determine which zone they’re in by searching their address using HRM’s interactive tool.

Parking bans for the municipality, or either zone, may occur before, during or after declared weather events. In some scenarios, bans may be lifted in one zone but still enforced in the other to accommodate targeted snow removal.

Compliance officers will be ticketing vehicles that obstruct sidewalk snow removal. HRM has enhanced enforcement around hospitals, schools, bus routes and challenging areas.

Vehicles can be ticketed or towed at any time if they interfere with snow removal operation in accordance with Section 139 of the Nova Scotia Motor Vehicle Act.

Planters, lawn decorations and other portable objects near sidewalks should be removed before winter, said HRM in a news release. Permanent objects or those too big to remove should be marked with visible reflectors.

A municipal by-law makes it illegal for property owners to remove snow onto the street or sidewalk.
