East Coast cast stars in comedy series about Saint John car wash

Published:

A new comedy series is bringing the vibrant culture of Saint John's manual car washes to the small screen.

Car Wash Wars,” a new comedy series filmed entirely in Saint John, N.B., features a laundry list of local talent, including Miramichi native Jimmy MacKinley.

“(It’s) probably the most absurdly unique television show that I’ve ever had the privilege to perform in,” said MacKinley, who stars as wealthy oligarch Mister Dulse.

The show, which is a collaborative effort between Paratactic Pictures Ltd. And Cazador Inc., features Saint John culture, absurd storylines and an entirely Atlantic Canadian cast.

The plot centers around Kayla Polley (Kristyn Green), daughter of car wash legend Johnny Polley (David Rossetti), as she navigates the challenges of inheriting the family business. Her path is complicated by the arrival of the flamboyant Mister Dulse.

“Part of my mission, alongside Sandy, is to create hyper-regionalized content that is culturally representative of New Brunswick,” said producer Steven Suntres. “We’re showcasing the dichotomy between blue-collar industry and a more upper-class society, a city with a history of opulence visible in its heritage buildings and bylaws.”

Suntres said the collaborative nature of the show allowed cast and crew to imbue the series with their personalities and comedic voices.

“Car Wash Wars,” which was filmed over five days, has a five-episode season that will wrap up on March 6, although Suntres says there could be future seasons.

Episodes air weekly on Bell FibeTV, channel 1 and the FibeTV app.
