Construction worker struck and killed by truck on New Brunswick highway

A 53-year-old construction worker died after being hit by a transport truck on a New Brunswick highway.

A worker has been struck and killed by a transport truck in a road construction zone in Burton, N.B.

The RCMP responded to the fatal collision in the eastbound lane of Highway 2 around 6:15 a.m. Thursday.

Police say the 53-year-old man was working on the highway when he was struck by the truck, which was towing a trailer. The truck driver called 911 and remained at the scene.

No one else was injured.

Police say the incident is under investigation, but they don’t expect to lay charges.

WorkSafeNB is also investigating the incident.

“We are deeply saddened to confirm that a worker with Northern Construction was killed early this morning when struck by a vehicle on Highway 2,” said Lynn Meahan-Carson, manager of corporate communications, in an emailed statement to CTV News Atlantic.

“Our condolences go out to the worker’s family, friends, and co-workers.”

The eastbound lane of Route 2 was closed for roughly seven hours while investigators remained on scene. It has since reopened.
