Sunday snow update for the Maritimes

CTV Atlantic meteorologist Kalin Mitchell says temperatures will come back down to below freezing Friday night so people should be careful of wet surfaces.

Snow is still expected in part of the Maritimes on Sunday as a Colorado Low exits the northeastern United States. The trend in the forecast has been for a higher chance the heaviest snow stays offshore of the region.

Thursday night snow reports

There are lots of reports of five-to-10 centimetres of snow coming down late Thursday afternoon through Thursday night. A few communities reported just over the 10-centimetre mark. Some areas reported snow totals as low as just a few centimetres.

Some of the reports came in Friday morning after temperatures had climbed above freezing so there may have been some melt and compaction of the snow before the measurement was taken. Still the event was well within the range that was expected.

Sunday trends less snowy

The trend in forecast models for the Sunday weather system has been to hold it a bit farther offshore as it passes south and east of Nova Scotia. That trend has been present for a few days now.

That suggests the heaviest snow is likely to fall offshore of the Maritimes. There is snow potential coming down in the forecast for New Brunswick, northern areas of Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island.

I would still monitor the forecast this weekend if you are in or travelling through southwestern New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. That is especially the case for the southwest of Nova Scotia and Atlantic coastal areas of that province which are still being indicated as seeing snow totals near 10 centimetres.

The snow would start Sunday morning and end Sunday evening.
