Winnipeg police officers joining transit riders for safety

Winnipeg police officers are returning to city buses to address violent and disruptive behaviour.

Just like last fall, Winnipeg police officers are going to join your transit ride this spring.

Starting this weekend, the Winnipeg Police Service will increase its presence across routes and facilities of Winnipeg Transit.

This comes after a pilot project was conducted in collaboration with the City of Winnipeg, which ran between September 2025 and the end of 2025, addressing violent and disruptive behaviour.

In a media release, Winnipeg police said the project was successful – leading to the project’s return this spring.

Officers will ride on buses and patrol near transit stops, bus shelters and stations. Both uniformed and plainclothes officers will be part of the project.

Among the uniformed officers, the newly formed Rapid Response Unit officers will also be part of it.

According to the media release, 325 violent crimes were reported at transit locations in 2024 – “a historic high” and nearly triple the 2019 level. From the pilot project last year in the fall, the level of transit-related violent crime fell by 18 per cent compared to the same time in 2024, police added.

The force said the project aims to detect and suppress violent crime and disorder.
