Speed display signs expanding across Manitoba

MPI is expanding its speed sign program to more communities, saying it is having an impact.

More reminders to stop people from speeding will be popping up around Manitoba this year.

Manitoba Public Insurance announced Friday it will be expanding its speed display sign program once again.

The program sees signs installed in communities showing a drivers’ speed with a warning to slow down if they’re going past the posted limit.

“We know that speeding is a cause of numerous collisions on roadways throughout our province,” said Justice Minister Matt Wiebe. “We also know that our government is working very diligently to make our roads safer and make communities safer throughout this province, and so that’s why it’s so important when we can deploy technologies like this.”

The program started in 2021 with 25 boards distributed in 13 different communities in Manitoba. The number has since expanded to 34 boards around the province, including Winnipeg, Brandon and Selkirk.

The signs collect data on driving patterns, and MPI said it has had a noticeable impact on vehicle speeds.

“Since this program has been introduced, the display signs have observed over 5.5 million vehicles, and these signs have alerted many drivers they’re speeding, and as a result, 190,000 of them have slowed down,” said Satvir Jatana, president and CEO of MPI. “We’re very pleased with the success of this program and the way it is helping remind Manitobans to drive to the speed limit and slow down.”
