Rail cars derail in northwestern Ontario

The Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB) is investigating a train derailment in a northern Ontario community.

Canadian National Railway (CN) confirmed to CTV News Winnipeg the derailment happened early Tuesday morning west of Emo, Ont.

Preliminary reports indicate the derailed cars were all transporting potash, CN officials say.

Train movement resumed Tuesday. CN crews worked throughout the night to safely clear the site and will remain in the area as cleanup activities are ongoing, officials say.

“There were no hazardous goods, fires, or injuries reported. CN would like to apologize for any inconvenience caused by this event and thanks local first responders for their assistance,” the company said in a statement.

According to the township, 14 train cars were involved. It asked the public to stay away from the site as cleanup continued.

TSB investigators were also deployed Tuesday to the community about 180 kilometres south of Kenora.

The independent agency said it will gather information and assess the incident.
