Multiple Manitoba communities under extreme cold warning

Residents of southwestern Manitoba should be prepared to bundle up this weekend.

An extreme cold warning was issued by Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) for much of the region, noting a period of very cold wind chills is expected over the weekend.

“An Arctic ridge of high pressure will settle in over southern Saskatchewan this evening giving way to cold temperatures for parts of the southern Prairies and northern grain belt overnight tonight and early Saturday morning,” ECCC said in its warning. “Air temperatures will dip towards minus 30 tonight and combine with winds up to 15 km/h leading to very cold windchill temperatures near minus 40.”

Areas impacted include Brandon, Dauphin, Roblin and Riding Mountain National Park.

ECCC said conditions will gradually improve Saturday morning.

They’re reminding people to cover up while outside, noting frostbite can develop within minutes on exposed skin.
