Manitoba offering free ice fishing this weekend

Overnight ice fishing in Manitoba.

The Manitoba government is encouraging residents to take part in some wintertime fun by offering free ice fishing this weekend.

From Feb. 15 to 17, Manitobans can take part in this year’s Winter Family Fishing Weekend, where anglers can fish without a licence.

“This is a great opportunity to experience ice fishing and participate in a recreational activity that continues to grow in popularity each year,” said Natural Resources Minister Ian Bushie in a news release.

“Whether you are new to fishing or an experienced angler, this is an excellent time to gather family and friends on the ice and try catching one of the many diverse fish species found in our province.”

The province notes that anglers must adhere to all possession limits and size restrictions, including regulations for specific individual waters. More information on provincial angling regulations can be found online.

A federal angling licence is still required in national parks this weekend.

In addition to Winter Family Fishing Weekend, Manitoba is offering free entry into provincial parks for the month of February. This means vehicle permits are not required; however, Snopasses are still needed for snowmobiling on groomed trails.
