Man arrested after wielding hatchet on Winnipeg bus

A 36-year-old man has been charged after he was found with a hatchet on a Winnipeg bus.

Around 12:15 p.m. Friday, police arrested the man downtown near Pioneer Avenue and Main Street. Officers said the man got onto a city bus, when another passenger noticed he was carrying what looked like a hatchet.

Police said the suspect didn’t threaten anyone with the weapon and it was confiscated by the bus operator.

While the man was in custody, police alleged he threatened to kill the officers.

John Todd Savage, 36, is charged with possessing a weapon, two counts of uttering threats, as well as failing to comply with a probation order and conditions of a release order.

He remains in custody. The charges haven’t been tested in court.
