Hockey fans boo U.S. national anthem at Winnipeg Jets game

The trend of booing the Star Spangled Banner at Canadian sports games continued in Winnipeg Tuesday.

Winnipeg hockey fans joined in on the trend of Canadian sports spectators booing the U.S. national anthem amid a looming trade war.

During Tuesday night’s Winnipeg Jets game against the Carolina Hurricanes, some people in the stands could be heard heckling during the U.S. anthem.

This booing is part of a growing movement at Canadian sporting events in response to U.S. President Donald Trump’s tariff threats.

Anthem singer Stacey Nattrass said she didn’t take the boos personally, adding that she was expecting some sort of reaction to the U.S. anthem.

“It was still a little bit difficult, but I totally understand where people are coming from,” she said.

Nattrass added that she understands the jeering is just a way for people to express their frustrations with the tariff threats, and she doesn’t judge anyone for taking part.

She noted she wouldn’t be surprised to hear the booing again at future games.

“I pride myself on being professional and being the vessel through which these anthems occur, and I can’t control anything outside of that,” she said.

“So that is my job to just keep going. It’s part of the tradition of sporting events and anthems, in particular to hockey, seem to hold a really dear spot for so many people, including myself.”
