‘Trump is trying to break us’: Liberal leader makes final pitch to Windsor-Essex voters

As the 2025 federal election campaign draws to a close, Liberal Leader Mark Carney made his last pitch to voters in Windsor-Essex on Saturday evening.

Filled with repeated hockey references and jabs at Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre, Carney, with his back-pointed to the Ambassador Bridge, centered his remarks on Canada-U.S. relations.

“We will win this trade war and build the strongest economy that works for everyone,” Carney told a crowd of close to 1,000 people.

Saturday marked Carney’s second trip to Windsor since the election campaign was triggered in late-March.

“So, the question is, imagine what we could do with a strong positive mandate in this election. That’s what we need, that mandate,” Carney said.

“We need a strong positive mandate because as President Trump has made clear yet again in the last few days, he is trying to break us, so America can own us.”

On the final day of campaigning Sunday, Carney was expected to spend the day in Ontario, Saskatchewan, Alberta and B.C., meeting with volunteers and supporters.

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre is scheduled to host multiple rallies across Ontario.

NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh had plans to campaign in B.C.

Windsor-West battleground

Carney was the second federal leader to venture into Windsor on Saturday after NDP head Jagmeet Singh attended a Unifor rally earlier in the day.

Lydia Miljan, a professor of political science at the University of Windsor, said the last-minutes visits are a sign Windsor is “up for grabs” in the eyes of the Liberals and NDP.

“I think the NDP is in an interesting position because while they’re doing very poorly nationally, we know Brian Masse is quite popular locally,”

“So, its do we stick with the guy that we’ve voted for, for the last 20 years, or do we jump on the bandwagon, and either vote fore change in the form of Mark Carney or vote for change in the form of Pierre Poilievre.”

Masse has represented the riding in the House of Commons since 2002.

CTV News previously chose Windsor-West as one of the eight battleground ridings to watch across Canada.

Miljan noted Carney’s decision to return to the border as the clock winds down on the election is “symbolic” of the on-going trade war, which the Liberals have made the focus of their campaign.

“Clearly they are selling Canadians on the idea there’s a new adult in the room, that we’re serious about trade and that we’re best positioned to deal with this threat of Donald Trump and tariffs,” she noted.
