Victoria transit talks hit impasse, union prepares for possible strike vote

Transit contract talks in Greater Victoria have hit an impasse, raising the possibility of job action.

Unifor Local 333 says negotiations with BC Transit broke down shortly after midnight Saturday and that it is now preparing for a strike vote after what it describes as a failure to meet its bargaining mandate.

The union represents transit operators, maintenance workers, and a range of skilled trades and support staff within the Victoria Regional Transit System.

Union president Stephen Bains tells CFAX 1070 the two sides remain apart, but adds the union is open to returning to the table.

BC Transit confirms talks have reached an impasse, saying the two sides were unable to reach agreement on key outstanding issues.

In a statement, the agency says it remains committed to negotiating in good faith to reach a fair collective agreement that balances the needs of employees, riders, and the long-term sustainability of transit service.

BC Transit says there is no impact to service at this time, and operations continue as normal.

The agency adds the dispute does not involve handyDART service.

There is no timeline yet for when a strike vote could take place or when negotiations may resume.
