Suspect arrested weeks after Burnaby hit-and-run

A 64-year-old Burnaby woman is still on the road to recovery after being hit by a driver last month, who then fled the scene.

Police have arrested a suspect in the Burnaby hit-and-run that left 64-year-old Maria Espedido hospitalized with serious injuries.

Burnaby RCMP confirmed to CTV News Thursday that they had arrested a 45-year-old man in connection to the crash.

Police did not name the suspect, and charges have not yet been laid. He was arrested Thursday by the Burnaby RCMP Criminal Collision Investigation Team, police said.

The crash at the intersection of Canada Way and Burris Street on Dec. 11 with a fractured right arm and seven broken ribs.

When CTV News spoke to her in her room at Royal Columbian Hospital a week after the crash, she was still visibly shaken by the incident.

“I am suffering too much,” she said at the time, before pleading for the driver who hit her to come forward and co-operate with police.

Police said Thursday that their investigation is ongoing and there “are no further details to report.”

“Road safety is one of Burnaby RCMP’s top priorities,” said Supt. Sunny Parmar, Burnaby RCMP’s operations officer, in a statement.

“We have been dedicating resources to this investigation since the outset and I am proud of the work that our Criminal Collision Investigation Team and other units have done to forward this investigation. We are thinking of the victim as she continues to recover from her injuries.”
