Impaired teen crashed into Port Moody, B.C., yard with passenger in trunk, police say

A teenage driver is facing multiple charges after allegedly crashing into the front yard of a Port Moody, B.C., home while impaired—and with a passenger in the trunk of the car.

The incident unfolded around 4 a.m. Saturday, when a patrol officer spotted a “heavily occupied” Honda sedan with an “N” novice driver decal on Clarke Road, the Port Moody Police Department said in a news release.

When the officer tried to pull the car over, the driver allegedly fled down a side street.

Authorities said they found the Honda a short time later in a residential yard, and that there were seven people in the vehicle, one of whom was in the trunk when the car crashed.

“Fortunately, there were no serious injuries reported as a result of this collision,” Const. Sam Zacharias said in a statement. “This vehicle had more occupants than seats and it certainly could have been a far worse outcome.”

The 19-year-old driver failed a roadside alcohol screening test and is facing multiple charges under B.C.’s Motor Vehicle Act, as well as a driving prohibition, authorities said.

“We would like to remind the public to always plan a safe ride home—there are so many options available, including public transit and rideshare,” Zacharias said.

Novice drivers in B.C. are only allowed one passenger, not including members of their immediate family, unless they’re accompanied by a supervisor who is at least 25 years old and has a full licence.

It’s unclear whether any of the passengers in Saturday’s crash qualified as a supervisor. CTV News has asked Port Moody police for more information.
