Charges laid in Surrey shooting that left husband and wife injured

A man has been charged in the shooting of a Surrey couple while their child sat in their nearby car last month, according to authorities.

On Dec. 16, 2024, around 6 p.m., a woman called 911 to report she and her husband had been shot on the street in the Newton area.

“In their car nearby, was a young child who was unharmed. Both victims were taken to hospital for treatment of serious injuries,” a statement from the Surrey Police Service said Wednesday.

Gagandeep Singh Baksh, 21, has been charged with attempted murder, discharging a firearm with intent, aggravated assault and two counts of assault with a weapon.

Police have not identified the victims or provided details on the extent of their injuries. Information about the relationship between the suspect and the victims – if any – has also not been released.

Baksh is from Squamish and the investigation into the shooting involved police from multiple jurisdictions – as well as the emergency response team – who executed search warrants at homes in Squamish, Delta, and Surrey.

Baksh was charged on Jan. 16 and remains in custody. His next court appearance is set for Feb. 10.
