3 officers injured during Mental Health Act arrest, Kelowna RCMP say

Three RCMP officers were injured while arresting a “distraught man” at a Kelowna, B.C., restaurant this week, according to authorities.

The incident unfolded late Monday afternoon at a business on Harvey Avenue, between Copper Road and Dilworth Drive.

Kelowna RCMP told CTV News the officers involved were carrying out a doctor-directed apprehension under the Mental Health Act.

“A physical altercation took place resulting in additional officers being dispatched to the scene to assist,” the detachment said in a news release.

“The distraught man was eventually taken into custody, placed under arrest, and although uninjured, was transported to the hospital for any treatment he might require.”

The three injured officers were also treated in hospital and are recovering at home, the RCMP said Tuesday.

Authorities have not provided any details on the extent of the officers' injuries, citing privacy concerns, but Cpl. Michael Gauthier told CTV News none of them remained hospitalized overnight.

“They went in yesterday and they all went home yesterday,” Gauthier said.

No further information is being released as the incident remains the subject of a criminal investigation, Gauthier said.
