Cause of deadly Brampton house fire under investigation

Crews discover a man with no vital signs after a house fire in Brampton near Williams Parkway and the 410.

The Office of the Fire Marshal will be investigating a blaze at a Brampton home that left one man dead, officials say.

The fire broke out at a residence on Royal Salisbury Way, near Highway 410 and Williams Parkway, at around 11 p.m. on Wednesday.

Speaking to reporters at the scene on Thursday, Brampton Fire Chief Andy Glynn said crews arrived to find flames on the second floor of a semi-detached home, which was registered as a two-unit apartment.

One occupant was found on the second floor and removed from the home. The victim, who has been described as an elderly man, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Glynn said two people were initially unaccounted for but it was later discovered that they had been away from the home at the time of the fire.

The occupants of an adjacent unit self-evacuated and no other injuries were reported.

Glynn said it appears the fire started in a second-floor bedroom, but noted that it will be up to the Office of the Fire Marshal (OFM) to determine the cause, origin, and circumstances surrounding the blaze.

It is not yet clear if the unit had working smoke detectors but Glynn said crews did not hear smoke alarms upon arrival.

Smoke and fire damage is contained mainly to the second floor, he said.
