Crown files direct indictment against Sask. teen who allegedly set classmate on fire

WATCH: A Saskatoon student who allegedly set her classmate on fire has chosen to have her trial heard by a judge-alone at Court of King’s Bench.

A Saskatoon teen accused of setting her classmate on fire will proceed directly to trial without preliminary hearing.

The Crown has filed a direct indictment against the teen in Saskatoon Court of King’s Bench, but the accused will still need to enter pleas.

The 14-year-old stands accused with attempted murder, arson and aggravated assault after a 15-year-old girl was doused in a flammable liquid and set on fire at Evan Hardy Collegiate on September 5, 2024.

She also faces a charge for unlawfully causing bodily harm in connection with a teacher who was injured while trying to extinguish the fire.

The names of the accused and victim cannot be published under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

The Crown has previously indicated it would seek an adult sentence on all four charges.

The case was initially scheduled for a preliminary inquiry in provincial court, with the hearing set for July 14-17.
