Sask. premier optimistic about possible peace deal between U.S. and Iran

Saskatchewan’s premier reacted positively to news of a tentative peace deal between the U.S. and Iran.

On Monday, Premier Scott Moe was asked to provide his initial thoughts about the agreement.

“All peace deals are good and I hope it does stick. I hope it is permanent,” he told media in a conference call while in Europe.

“I understand it’s an initial deal and there would be further negotiations that would happen and it’s a fair question given we’ve had a number of those initial agreements that have been spoken to but haven’t come to fruition in the days post-that deal being agreed to.”

Moe was also asked about what effect a peace deal would have on the price of oil, gas and other commodities that have been affected by the war.

The premier expressed hope that prices on affected commodities would climb down.

“I would hope so, because directly – families in Saskatchewan and Canada are feeling the price at the pumps is a major inflationary pressure and I would say indirectly, that that very fuel price is an indirect pressure on the groceries that we are purchasing at our store, and virtually everything that we purchase at any store,” Moe said.

“For a province like Saskatchewan, it’s all railed or trucked in once it gets here on a boat, so I think some reprieve of the fuel prices for us as families and for industries as well that are employing us as families, would be positive as well.”

Moe said many countries have engaged Saskatchewan in hopes of diversifying their supply of resources like grain, oil and gas – especially in light of the war.

The premier said the interest extends to helium, uranium and copper as well.

Saskatchewan’s role in defence

Moe was speaking from the Saskatchewan pavilion at the 2026 Eurosatory global defence show in Paris.

The premier said Saskatchewan’s existing manufacturing capacity and expertise in mining and agricultural vehicles/equipment naturally crosses over to the sorts of military equipment showcased at the defence show.

Moe added that many Saskatchewan companies have already added defence procurement as a portion of the manufacturing work they do.

“I think it’s an opportunity for us and for our manufacturing industry to be able to experience some growth as we see countries across the European Union and North America and around the world increasing their investment in that defence space,” he said.
