Final bank branch in Chesterville, Ont. set to close

TD Bank says it will close its Chesterville, Ont. branch, meaning customers will have to drive nearly 20 minutes to the next closest location.

TD Canada Trust is set to close its branch in Chesterville, Ont. early next year, leaving the eastern Ontario community without a bank branch.

The Scotiabank branch in Chesterville closed to the public on May 13, with all services relocated to the branch in nearby Casselman.

A spokesperson for TD Canada Trust confirms it will close its Chesterville branch on Chesterville Main Street North in January, with client accounts transitioned to a new TD Canada Trust branch in Embrun.

“We continually assess client demand for our branch network and adjust our operations accordingly,” TD Canada Trust said in a statement to CTV News Ottawa.

“Following a detailed review – which examined foot traffic patterns and the number of transactions completed – we concluded that we will be better able to serve our clients through the new Embrun location.”

TD Canada Trust says it will share information about the changes and potential impacts to its clients “as soon as we can.”

“Signage regarding this transition was recently posted in the Chesterville branch,” the bank said.

Embrun is located approximately 25 kilometres from Chesterville.

Scotiabank tells CTV News Ottawa it made the “difficult decision” to relocate its services from the branch in Chesterville to its branch in Casselman, with the branch closing on May 13.

“With client preferences changing, and more day-to-day banking being done digitally, we are continuing to evolve how we serve our clients and invest in areas that make it easier for our clients to bank with us in multiple ways,” Scotiabank said in a statement to CTV News Ottawa.

“We communicated this change to all affected clients and are working with them to ensure a smooth transition. Our teams in Chesterville and Casselman are committed to assisting all clients with any questions they may have.”

North Dundas Mayor Tony Fraser said he was disheartened to learn of the closure of Chesterville’s TD branch.

“I thought my stomach couldn’t drop any further than it had with notice of the closure of the Bank of Nova Scotia. It was, ‘What’s next? What else can happen in Chesterville that negatively affects the community?’” he said.

“It is a different way of life (here). We do like to connect. We do like the personal service. We do like to understand who’s dealing with their money.”

Several bank branches have closed in Ottawa and eastern Ontario in recent months.

RBC is closing its branch on 236 Richmond Road in Ottawa’s Westboro neighbourhood on Aug. 27.

Scotiabank is also closing its branch on Donald B. Munro Drive in Carp on Oct. 21, 2026. TD also recently closed its branch in Blackburn Hamlet.

The Scotiabank branch at 388 Richmond Road closed in 2024 after being open for more than 100 years in Westboro.

In February, it was announced the RBC branch on the campus of the University of Ottawa will close this spring as part of a planned redevelopment of the student centre.

Last summer, Scotiabank closed its branch on the campus of Carleton University.

Fraser said losing a bank can make promoting an area challenging.

“There’s disappointment, there’s discouragement, but we also have to be ready to look at new and different opportunities,” he said.
