Canada Road Safety Week in full swing, here are the speeds drivers clocked

Canada Road Safety Week is in full swing and officers with the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have been busy nabbing stunt drivers in the Ottawa Valley.

An 18-year-old is facing a stunt driving charge after being caught speeding in the Upper Ottawa Valley Wednesday morning, according to the OPP.

Police say the driver was stopped when he clocked 141 km/h in an 80 km/h zone on B Line Road in Township of Laurentian Valley.

As a result, their licence was suspended, and their vehicle was impounded.

In Renfrew, the OPP stopped a driver for clocking 178 km/h in a posted 80 zone on Cobden Road in Admaston-Bromley.

As a result, this driver is facing a stunt driving charge, a 30-day driving licence suspension and a 14-day vehicle impoundment.

If convicted, they will be facing a minimum $2,000 fine, six demerit points and a one year driving prohibition.

In Ontario, if you’re convicted of speeding, you may receive three demerit points for going over the speed limit by 16 to 29 km/h, four points for going over the speed limit by 30 to 49 km/h and six points for going over the speed limit by 50 km/h or more.

Speeders can also be subject to hefty fines, depending on how fast they’re going.

The OPP reminds people of the dangers of speeding.

“The laws of physics behind speeding affect everyone the same way. Speeding increases braking and stopping distances. It also reduces your field of vision, which makes it harder to react quickly to changing road conditions,” reads the government of Ontario’s website.
