Sudbury, Ont., couple celebrating 65 years of marriage

From the newest northern Ontario lottery winners, a Sudbury couple celebrating their 65th wedding anniversary to a dog dressed up for Valentine's Day.

A couple from the Greater Sudbury area of Minnow Lake is celebrating a special milestone this weekend after 65 years of marriage and sharing their advice for longevity.

Rachelle and Yvan Aubut are marking their 65th wedding anniversary Saturday.

After leaving his hometown of St-Clements, Que., at age 16, Yvan ended up in Sudbury after getting hired on at INCO in 1959.

He met Rachelle while rooming at her mother’s boarding house and they married in 1960, his son Gary said.

The Aubuts have a second son, Denis, two grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

During the INCO strike in the 60s, Rachelle worked for a bit at Silverman’s on Elm Street.

“Today, they still enjoy taking their coffee breaks with friends at our local coffee shop,” Gary said.

Respect is the key to their lasting relationship, Rachelle told CTVNewsNorthernOntario.ca in a phone interview Friday afternoon.

“You have to listen to one another,” she said.

“Never go to bed mad.”

Life goes by so fast, Rachelle said, so they are taking it one day at a time.

The couple is planning a low-key celebration this weekend due to Yvan’s health.
