Snowmobile rider injured in crash on North Bay trail

A snowmobiler had to be flown via air ambulance with non-life-threatening injuries after a crash in the North Bay-area on Friday afternoon.

A snowmobiler sustained non-life-threatening injuries after a crash on the Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs A1 trail in North Bay on Friday afternoon.

Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) said the incident occurred when the rider struck a pressure crack on Trout Lake, causing them to be thrown from the machine. The rider’s leg became trapped in the snowmobile’s track, requiring emergency responders to assist in their extrication.

“OPP officers and paramedics worked together to safely extricate the rider before an Ornge air ambulance landed on the frozen lake to transport them to the hospital,” police said in a social media post.

Authorities used the incident to remind the public of the potential dangers of winter trails, noting that ice conditions can change rapidly and pressure cracks can be difficult to spot.

“Even experienced riders can encounter unexpected hazards on the trails,” police said.

“Always ride with caution, scan the terrain ahead and be prepared for sudden obstacles.”
