Sextortion investigation in northern Ont. leads to 12 charges for southern Ont. suspect

A southern Ontario resident is facing charges in connection with a sextortion case their former partner in Kapuskasing.

A sextortion investigation in the northern Ontario town of Kapuskasing has led to charges for a Whitby resident.

Ontario Provincial Police say the victim contacted the James Bay detachment on Feb. 5 and said their former intimate partner was threatening to share intimate images of them online.

“The investigation determined that the accused had also assaulted the victim, committed mischief and theft and violated court-ordered release conditions,” said police in a news release Thursday.

The accused was arrested by OPP officers in Whitby and their cellphone was seized as evidence.

As a result of the investigation, a 35-year-old from Whitby, Ont., whom police have not named to protect the victim’s identity, has been charged with:

• extortion,
• sexual assault,
• criminal harassment – repeatedly communicate,
• assault causing bodily harm – spousal,
• assault – spousal,
• 4 counts of mischief – domestic,
• theft under $5,000,
• failure to comply with an undertaking and
• breach of recognizance

The accused was held in custody ahead of a court appearance Feb. 6 in Toronto.

Provincial police said victims of sexual assault are not alone, in their news release.

“Contact the Cochrane District Victim Services 24-hour crisis line at 1-877-264-4208 for assistance and guidance.”

Police also reminded individuals that in emergencies, call 911 immediately.
