Overweight commercial vehicle leads to 7 charges in Sudbury-area traffic stop

A 61-year-old Goderich man faces seven charges under Ontario’s Highway Traffic Act after provincial police discovered his commercial truck was severely overweight and operating without proper licensing during a traffic stop on Highway 69 south of Sudbury last week.

Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) conducted the inspection on May 9 after an officer noticed a violation involving the commercial vehicle during a routine patrol of Highways 69 and 637. Police determined the driver did not have the proper licence class and was operating an overweight load without a valid permit.

As a result of the police inspection, the driver was charged with:

• operating a commercial vehicle with an improper licence class,
• driving a commercial motor vehicle without a valid Commercial Vehicle Operator’s Registration certificate,
• driving an overweight vehicle in violation of permit limits,
• two counts of failing to display an inspection sticker,
• failing to use a mandatory electronic logging device, and
• failing to accurately complete a daily inspection report.

“The exact weight of the load is evidentiary and will be disclosed in court,” said OPP Const. Berkley Parisien in an email to CTV News.

In a social media post related to the incident, OPP stressed that commercial vehicle inspections help identify mechanical issues, ensure load security, and verify driver compliance. Oversized loads require permits, escorts, and extra caution from all road users.

The accused is scheduled to appear in court in Sudbury at a later date.
