Northern Ont. motorist faces drug trafficking, impaired charges after traffic stop

A traffic stop has led to impaired driving charges and more for a northern Ontario man.

On Feb. 8 at about 1:30 p.m., officers with the James Bay Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) detachment conducted a traffic stop on Jolin Street in Hearst, Ont., said police in a news release.

“During the interaction, officers determined that the driver had consumed an intoxicating substance,” OPP said.

“The individual was arrested and transported to the Hearst OPP detachment for further testing.”

According to authorities, a subsequent search resulted in the seizure of suspected methamphetamine tablets.

As a result of the incident, the driver, a 45-year-old local man, was charged with drug trafficking and possession of proceeds of crime over $5,000 along with two impaired driving charges – including having a blood alcohol concentration of more than 80.

In addition to the charges the accused’s driver’s licence was suspended for 90 days and the vehicle stopped was impounded for seven days by police.

“Drive sober,” said OPP Const. Kyler Brouwer in a related social media post.
