Northern Ont. man out on probation flees from police drops replica handgun, bear spray

A suspect fleeing from police allegedly dropped a replica handgun and bear spray before surrendering to officers, Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) say.

On Jan. 4 around 9:45 p.m., OPP officers patrolling Government Road in Kirkland Lake saw a person in breach of their release conditions.

“Upon being advised they were under arrest, the individual fled from police discarding a replica handgun and bear spray onto the ground,” OPP said in a news release.

“The person then surrendered to police.”

As a result, a 26-year-old local man is facing multiple charges. The accused was charged with carrying a concealed prohibited device or ammunition, possession of a prohibited device or ammunition and resisting a peace officer in addition to charges related to breaking his previous release conditions; two counts of possession of a firearm or ammunition contrary to prohibition order, failure to comply with a probation order and failing to comply with an undertaking.

The accused was remanded in police custody and is scheduled to appear in court in on Feb. 27.
