Cooler, wet weekend weather aids firefighters in northeastern Ontario

Mattagami First Nation evacuees begin returning home as cooler, wet weather helps crews hold Timmins 9 wildfire at about 3,100 hectares.

Ontario Forest Fires says there were no new wildland fires confirmed in the North East Region on Sunday as of its update that evening.

The Ministry of Natural Resources said in the update, two active wildland fires remain, with Timmins 9 now being held and contained to 3,151 hectares.

“Crews continue to strengthen hose lines, establish new lines along dozer guard built by heavy equipment operators, and demobilize values protection equipment in areas where the wildland fire risk has been reduced,” said fire officials.

“Infrared scanning was conducted early (Sunday) morning and hot spots have been identified for crews to prioritize.”

This has cleared the way for residents of Mattagami First Nation to return home Monday, according to Fire Chief Curtis Fowler.

In a post on social media, Fowler said the community will be open for members and residents as of 10 a.m. June 15, with public access to resume after 6 p.m.
