Legault government has spoken to the two American consuls in Quebec

International Relations Minister Martine Biron and Finance Minister Eric Girard say Quebec has a plan if tariffs are levied.

The Legault government has delivered its message to the two American consuls posted in Quebec.

International Relations Minister Martine Biron confirmed that she had spoken to the two American diplomatic representatives on Tuesday.

In a news scrum at the National Assembly on Wednesday, she said that they are allies of Quebec at a time when the Trump administration is threatening to impose 25 per cent tariffs on all goods from Canada.

“We told them that we don’t want tariffs and that we are important partners of the Americans, that there will be consequences for us of course (if tariffs are imposed), but very serious consequences for them too, there will be an inflationary spiral,” she said when journalists asked her to summarize what she had told them.

The American steel and aluminum lobbies have also told the Legault government that they are its allies in opposing the tariffs, she added.

Two of the six American consuls posted to Canada are in Quebec, one in Montreal and the other in Quebec City.
