Black History Month events set to kick off in Montreal next week

Black History Month in Montreal, featuring a vast array of activities celebrating the city’s Black communities, will begin next week.

To celebrate the 35th edition of the Round Table on Black History Month, the 100th anniversary of BHM in Quebec, and 10th anniversary of the official logo, organizers have scheduled events, including music, theatre, dance lessons, poetry, and more.

The theme of this year’s month is “Together, let’s raise our voices.”

“As the struggle for equality continues and narratives become harder to parse, BHM remains a force for memory, celebration, and collective mobilization—even well after February is over,” a news release on the month says.

Artist, activist and radio host Dice B. was chosen as the French-speaking spokesperson, and Black Community Initiatives at the Disabled Women’s Network of Canada director Tamara Angeline Medford-Williams will be the anglophone spokesperson.

“This role is more than just a celebration of a single month—it is an opportunity to honour our people, amplify our stories, and celebrate the contributions of Black, African, and Caribbean communities while fostering unity, understanding, and collective pride," said Medford-Williams.

A calendar highlighting the 2026 laureates is available for free and features the following people:

• Alix Adrien – vice-president of the Canadian Alliance of Black Educators and member of the Québec Board of Black Educators (QBBE) since 1986.
• Nadine Alcindor – journalist, director, and documentary producer.
• Fred Anderson – author, historian, and figure in Montreal’s Sir George Williams affair (1969).
• Will Baptiste – author, speaker, founder and president of Parlons Entre Hommes and Rising Men Alliance, and recognized voice for mental health and healthy masculinity.
• Latoya Belfon – author, CEO of Labworks Publishing, educator, and speaker.
• Dieudonné Ella Oyono – director of economic development at the City of Montreal, founder of Afrique Canada Opportunités, former president of the Parti Québécois, candidate in the 2018 elections, economist, professor, author, and lecturer.
• Oluwanifemi Fagbohun – chemical and polymer engineer; author; and founder of Niffy Signature, a vegan and cruelty-free cosmetics brand.
• Constantine Greenaway – president of the St. Kitts & Nevis Cultural Association (Montreal) and singer-songwriter.
• Ali NDiaye, alias Webster – rapper, Quebec hip-hop veteran, author, and history enthusiast.
• Christelle Onomo Lopes – social entrepreneur and youth-centre director.
• Biba Tinga – president of the Sickle Cell Disease Association of Canada (SCDAC), the driving force behind the first Canadian registry for sickle cell anemia, and one of the inspirations behind federal Bill S-201.
• Cynthia Waithe – president of Barbados House Montreal and vice-president of the Carimas Montreal carnival.
