Nurse picks up paintbrush to brighten up maternal unit at Stratford hospital

A Registered Nurse at Stratford General Hospital has shown she has more skills to offer patients than just as part of their medical care.

Jill Cortes has taken on a creative project in the Maternal/Child Unit, a large mural designed to inspire patients, families and staff.

The intention was to create a memorable and inspirational backdrop for families as they leave the hospital with their newborns. The unit collaborated on the design together, choosing a woodland theme with vibrant colours.

“We wanted something uplifting and exciting to document this special moment for families,” Jill explained. “Walking out our unit doors with your baby for the first time is surreal.”

The mural was completed when she had time on her shift, with the assistance of some of her other artistically inclined colleagues.

Since it’s completion, families have been known to take pictures with the mural and their newborns, “The fact that my artwork will be a part of so many parents’ first photos of their baby is very special to me,” Jill said. “I am proud to add some beauty to our hallways.”
