First court appearance for former city councillor charged with extortion

The lawyer for Miriam Hamou, a former city councillor facing a charge of extortion, made a court appearance on her behalf Tuesday.

After being charged in November, the case against former London city councillor Mariam Hamou was dealt with in a London courtroom for the first time on Tuesday.

Charged with extortion and harassment, Hamou did not appear in court in person but was represented by Stephen Troyer from Ron Ellis Law who appeared via Zoom.

Troyer told the court that, “We received disclosure today from the Crown.”

A ban on publication was placed on evidence surrounding the case as well as identifying the complainant named in the charges.

The 50-year-old Hamou represented Ward 6 as councillor for about a year.

The court matter was put over until her next appearance scheduled for April 7.
