Bail for one of the accused in explosives and weapons investigation in North London

One of the suspects in the Chesham Avenue weapons investigation has been granted bail. CTV London’s Nick Paparella shares more.

As he stood in the prisoner’s box, Zekun (Alex) Wang, 26, could be seen getting emotional and wiping away tears.

After a bail hearing last week, Justice of the Peace Kristine Diaz handed down her decision and approved his release from custody at the Elgin-Middlesex Detention Centre with strict conditions.

The master’s student came from China in 2012 to study at Western University and among his conditions, he and his parents had to surrender their passports.

The court was told that he would be released under house arrest at his parent’s home in Richmond Hill. Wang must also wear a GPS ankle monitor and he and his parents are pledging a total of $410,000.

He is also not allowed to be on a cellphone or a computer.

“The blanket order is that you are not to access the internet,” said Diaz.

Details surrounding the case were read out in court but a ban on publication prevents the media from disclosing what was read into the record.

Wang and three others were charged after London Police searched a home at 212 Chesham Place in north London following a trespassing incident at Western in January.

All four of the accused face a rash of explosives and weapons related offences including manufacturing firearms and possession of explosives.

Wang’s lawyer Nick Cake addressed the media outside the courthouse.

“He’s relieved, to be going home with his parents and he’s happy tonight that he will not be in a cage,” said Cake.

Meanwhile in another courtroom, co-accused Fei (Frank) Han, 25, made a brief court appearance after he was denied bail last week. He is expected back in court on Friday.

The other two charged in the case, Jerry Tong, 27, and Feiyang (Astrid) Ji, 21, have appearances scheduled for later this month.

Wang’s next court date is slated for April 23, giving the defence time to prepare.

“We’re going to start moving the case forward with getting disclosure and seeing how we are going to attack these charges,” said Cake.
