Laurier student’s artwork celebrates strength in diversity for Black History Month

A Grand River Transit bus featuring artwork by Wilfrid Laurier University student Vanessa Nkansah-Okoree will circulate throughout Waterloo Region in February to commemorate Black History Month.

The artwork was unveiled Sunday at the Canadian Caribbean Association of Waterloo Region’s (CCAWR) launch event at the University of Waterloo’s Federation Hall.

Nkansah-Okoree says her painting emphasizes unity within diversity.

“Diversity within the Black community is often overlooked, and my goal is to highlight the richness of that diversity, showcasing how we are united in our experiences but unique in our identities,” she said in a media release. “I want to challenge the narrow, stereotypical portrayals of Black people and instead celebrate the depth of our identities. By embracing our differences and recognizing the importance of diverse representation, we can create a more inclusive, empowered community.”

Nkansah-Okoree, whose parents immigrated from Ghana, is pursuing a master’s degree in health sciences with a focus on health equity for the Black community.

The bus wrap initiative was organized by CCAWR in partnership with the Region of Waterloo to showcase and celebrate Black identity and resilience throughout the month.
