Dresses, suits wanted for barrier-free prom at Brantford high school

Some students in Brantford are planning a barrier-free prom experience for people with special needs. CTV’s Alexandra Holyk reports.

For many high school students, going to prom is a rite of passage. For others, it can be unaffordable, inaccessible, or even just uncomfortable. For students with special needs, it can be a challenge trying to fit in.

Melissa Lancaster, a teacher at Assumption College School in Brantford, Ont., wants to change that.

“Sometimes kids don’t feel safe, sometimes they don’t feel that they’re comfortable,” she said.

For years, Lancaster said she noticed her special education students weren’t attending school events or dances. That’s when she decided to organize the “Spring Fling” — a free dinner and dance that gives students with special needs an opportunity to dress up and celebrate with their friends.

“We are creating an environment where they are with their friends, with their peers, and that there’s no reason why they can’t come,” she said.

The event takes place every few years. This year’s theme is “Once Upon a Prom,” and students from various departments are pitching in to make the night as perfect as can be.

“It’s a whole school event — all hands on deck,” said Rosanna Jaeger-Petrella, the special education department head.

The Spring Fling is mostly organized by Lancaster and her recreation and leadership students, however, the school’s construction, culinary, and cosmetology programs are also involved.

“It’s about bringing the community together and making sure all the kids have a wonderful time,” said Grade 12 student Salma Bisi.

“Give them the best opportunity that they can have,” added Foster Dropko, another Grade 12 student.

In the lead up to the big night, the school is collecting donations to ensure the event is free of cost and barriers.

“We’re looking for a lot of dresses and shoes,” said Grade 12 student Evangeline D’Andrea. “So anything that is hiding in the back of your closet, you can come forward and donate at our office.”

The students are also accepting food and lumber, as well as monetary donations. Clothing can be dropped off at the school’s main office until March 31, while funds can be donated online until April 23.

“You just have to put in the notes that it’s going toward the ‘Spring Fling,’” said Grade 13 student Gavin Selluski.

The Spring Fling takes place April 24. Beyond the big night, Lancaster said she hopes other schools follow suit.

“My hope is that perhaps it inspires others in our province and beyond to maybe do something for their kids,” she said. “Because everybody deserves to go to prom.”
