Blowing snow and extreme cold to hit Waterloo Region, Guelph, Stratford and Brantford

More advisories from Environment Canada, as blowing snow and extreme cold will hit much of southwestern Ontario on Tuesday, including Waterloo Region, Guelph, Stratford and Brantford.

The agency released a blowing snow advisory for Waterloo Region, Stratford and Guelph at 5:13 a.m., saying gusty winds could create up to zero visibility. Snow drifting onto the roads could also impact driving conditions. Winds are expected to die down by Tuesday evening. Environment Canada said travelling is expected to be hazardous with the low visibility. Drivers should be prepared to adjust their driving to the conditions.

Extreme cold warning

Brantford and its surrounding areas can expect frigid temperatures Tuesday. Environment Canada warns of extreme cold, with wind chill values near -30 C. The agency said residents who are young children, older adults, people with chronic illnesses, people working or exercising outdoors and people without shelter are at greater risk during this time. They said pets should also not be outside.

The temperatures are expected to warm up slightly later Tuesday morning.

Cold-related symptoms and frostbite signs

Environment Canada is reminding people in the affected areas to watch out for cold-related symptoms and signs of frostbite.

These include:

• shortness of breath
• chest pain
• muscle pain and weakness
• numbness and colour change in fingers and toes.
